Italy leads hashtagEurope in having the largest number of women lawyers registered with the Bar. What a great evolution, all things considered!
If we look across Europe, in the hashtagUK, the first woman was admitted to a law faculty in 1873, in hashtagItaly in 1876, in hashtagFrance in 1887. However, being admitted to university did not necessarily mean that they were granted the right to take a degree in law or practice as members of the bar.
Italyโs own pioneer in the field, Lidia Poรซt, was admitted to the hashtagTorino bar association in 1883 becoming the first female lawyer of the country. Her later disbarment sparked a movement to allow women to practice law and hold public office in Italy, although it would still take long years until women were finally granted full equal status in the field.
